Investigation Launched Against Former President

Prosecutors in Argentina have initiated an investigation into former President Alberto Fernández, who has been accused by his ex-partner, Fabiola Yáñez, of causing her serious harm.

Allegations of Physical and Psychological Abuse

Fabiola Yáñez, 43, who served as Argentina’s first lady, filed a complaint last week accusing the 65-year-old ex-leader of physically and psychologically abusing her during their relationship. She also claims that Fernández forced her to undergo an abortion. Their relationship ended shortly after Fernández left office in 2023.

Testimony from Spain

In her testimony, which she provided from Spain, Yáñez detailed the physical aggression and emotional threats she allegedly suffered. She also submitted photos showing a black eye and bruises, which were later leaked to the media, causing widespread outrage in Argentina.

Fernández Denies All Accusations

Alberto Fernández has denied all the allegations, describing them as baseless. He claimed that Yáñez’s black eye was due to a “cosmetic treatment.” Despite his denial, Fernández has been banned from leaving the country while the investigation is ongoing.

Prosecutor Seeks Formal Charges

On Wednesday, prosecutor Ramiro González officially requested that charges be brought against Fernández. Under Argentine law, it will be up to a judge to decide whether or not to proceed with legal charges.

Fernández’s Political Background

Alberto Fernández first entered politics in the early 1980s, during the final days of Argentina’s military dictatorship. He served as president from 2019 to 2023.
