Details: Taking note of allegations regarding police heavy-handedness during recent student-led demonstrations across several states, the Supreme Court of India observed that the constitutional right to peaceful protest must be protected. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant noted that both citizens and law enforcement officers must exercise self-restraint during public demonstrations. The apex court indicated that it is considering framing uniform national guidelines to regulate police procedures and crowd-management protocols during large-scale public protests to ensure safety and prevent excessive force.
